CHURCHES CELEBRATE GROWING DIVERSITY
By
Sophie Vandenberg

As Carolin Tait served communion at Classis Toronto’s All
Nations Heritage Sunday service, she distributed bread from a
variety of cultures around the world. The diverse breads
illustrated the unity of the diverse body of Christ. But they
also illustrated the growing diversity of the churches in
Classis Toronto.
"The gospel story makes unity in the midst of diversity
possible. Diversity is something to be embraced, not
overcome," said speaker Rev. Ray Aldred. He is the director
of the First Nations Alliance Churches of Canada and a member of
the Swan River Cree Nation. "I come from a throw-away
people. We lost our language and our songs," Aldred said,
noting that colonizers tried to make his people more
"suitable" by eliminating important aspects of their
culture. Aldred grew up trying to hide the fact that he was of
aboriginal descent. It was only when Aldred began to look at
Scripture through Cree eyes that his faith came alive.
"It’s a positive sign. Maybe this is the face of the
CRC of the future," said Shiao Chong, a member of Rehoboth
Fellowship Christian Reformed Church, Toronto, reflecting on the
increasing diversity of the churches.
