ICS WINS RIGHT TO GRAND Ph.Ds
By Sophie Vandenberg
After a 25-year quest, the Institute for Christian
Studies has received approval to grant its own doctoral
and master's degrees in philosophy. Ontario's
Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities announced
on Dec. 16 that she had granted consent for the Toronto
graduate school to offer the degrees.
ICS president Harry Fernhout called the announcement
"incredible news." Philosophy professor
Dr. Lambert Zuidervaart said, "It means that our
academic peers officially recognize and endorse our
graduate programs in interdisciplinary philosophy."
Zuidervaart also noted that the change will allow for new
forms of cooperation with other universities. ICS
chancellor Barbara Carvill said the school's new status
will help ICS students when they apply for jobs and pursue
further studies.
The institute's new degree-granting powers take effect
immediately.
